Orin is based on the real Orin, my grandson. Orin has Moebius syndrome, a rare congenital condition that results from underdevelopment of the facial nerves that control eye movement and facial expression. The condition can also affect the nerves responsible for speech, chewing, and swallowing. Although his face is "frozen," Orin's large, expressive eyes tell us exactly what he is thinking. Orin also has limb reduction, but this does not prevent him from being the most huggable baby ever!
